Service, now that is a fun word. What do you think of when you hear the word service? Does it make you think of the annual check-up on your home air conditioner? Or the car and its 5,000 mile oil change due in just a few miles? Let’s think about the service, we are to be a part of, to further God’s Kingdom. In 1 Corinthians 12:4 – 7, we are reminded of how there are many spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. This is the scripture I’ve been studying in “Leadership Essentials” and trying to memorize and I just practiced it by typing these verses. It is great practice for us to memorize scripture, but, we are to put it into action too. Jesus was the greatest example of a humble servant; He came to serve, not to be served (Mark 10:45).
How are you doing with your part of serving? Have you found a place to use your spiritual gift (some of you are double blessed and have more than one)? Are you serving our Lord? Or, are you just thinking about it? I know with our busy life styles this can be a challenge. We are all running the fast race of life, trying to keep all the plates in the air, spreading ourselves too thin at times, and to think that we should add one more thing to our schedules is overwhelming at times.
Let me share with you, how service should and can be a way of life for you too. First, pray and ask God how he wants to use you? He will give you that answer so you do need to be ready. Maybe He is asking you to help your family, or your church, or to go and help in the community or even beyond our town. He may have tugged at your heart to go on a mission trip, now that may stretch some of you, but, as I reminded a lady just this week, He equips the called…so never underestimate the power of our almighty God. Our heavenly Father will use you in a mighty way if you let go of your own agenda and let God be in the driver’s seat. Seek out someone that knows you well and bounce off ideas with them, if they confirm what you are already feeling a nudge from the Holy Spirit to do, that could be your confirmation.
When we serve out of our own spiritual gift given to us, we serve with so much more enthusiasm and joy. He is the one who created us and gifted us all in a unique way. Jesus is our example of how we can all humble ourselves and find an area to serve Him. Please pray and ask Him where you would best be suited to serve and don’t hesitate to give me a call if I can help in anyway. God’s resources are endless and he has a very special place for you to be able to use your gift. Remember that the blessing you are to others comes back to us in so many areas when we are serving as Jesus served. You will be blessed!
